The Role – Engineering Manager - Foundations

We are looking for an experienced people focused Engineering Manger for our Foundations collective, a group of cross-functional teams that look after the core platform systems- and services of the Unmind platform. Their ultimate goal is to enable multiple teams across Unmind to scale sustainably and robustly to reach more users in the global market.

This role has a clear path to progress to a Head of Platform Engineering role as we continue to add teams to the Foundations collective.

Things you'll do in this role

We’re scaling quickly, which means that the focus and responsibilities of any position can be quite dynamic – but here’s how we initially see your skills and passion coming to life at Unmind:

Building & Growing Effective Teams - You will initially be managing three product teams that are all at different stages in their lifecycle. In 2022 this group is expected to grow to six teams. In addition to hiring for new teams, growing existing teams and helping them all form, storm, norm & perform, your main goal is to support-, unblock and inspire happy, healthy and fulfilled teams.

Managing Managers - As our Engineering Team Leads line manage most of the Engineers within their Product Team, you will primarily manage the Engineering Team Leads, supporting not just their long term development but also coaching them in leading an effective team and developing good personal development plans.

Collaboration - In most of your work, you will work closely with your Product Manager, Engineering Team Lead, Staff Engineers and our People & Talent teams at Unmind. Additionally you will coach your teams in building good relationships with stakeholders, other teams and external collaborators.

Delivery & Planning - You will collaborate with PMs and Engineering Team Leads on quarterly planning, sprint planning, and setting OKRs for Product Teams. Although you will not be accountable for delivery planning or management, but will sometimes find yourself in the detail of delivery planning as a mentor or a coach.

Technical Involvement - Working alongside Staff Engineers, Engineering Managers are not expected to be hands on or contribute to technical direction or design. You will mainly find yourself in technical discussions as mentor, coach or when collaborating on delivery planning.

Skills and Experience

We firmly believe that no one is the finished article and that there should be learning in every role you do. However, some experience in the following is important for the role.

  • Experience with supporting multiple product development teams - with a focus on people, productivity and culture
  • Experience & passion for developing others through coaching- and mentoring.
  • Experience of managing managers
  • Good understanding of agile ways of working and improving developer productivity
  • Good understanding of how teams can use metrics- and data to inform key product and technical decisions.
  • Passionate about mental health, tech-for-good, and generally improving people’s lives
  • Comfortable working in an environment of rapid growth, constant change, and lots of unknowns
  • Excited to play a part in making Unmind the global category leader of workplace mental health
